JUGALBANDI OF TRADITIONAL NORTH INDIAN AND SOUTH INDIAN JEWELLERY ‘Jadau’ and ‘Yetti Sedikarai Valai’ represent a jugalbandi of North Indian and South Indian jewellery traditions going back at least 2000 years to the Ajanta frescoes and perhaps even beyond. Done on 22 carat base which is later filled with lac on which precious stones are fixed with the aid of paper-thin pieces of 24 carat gold, the process forms the basis of both South and North India’s fabled ‘jadau’ jewellery. With its dazzling repertoire of ‘addigais’ ‘maanga malais,’ ‘jadai samaan,’ ‘haaram,’ ‘timakha,’ sarpeches, bangles and mukuts, ‘jadau’ has been celebrated through time in poetry literature, painting, music and dance. The kundan and enamel work is a distinctive feature of the North Indian jadau style done on the reverse side of each piece, it involves cutwork or ‘jaali’ work of the gold base or patra on the back of the piece. An exhibition of Jadau Jewellery opens on Nov 14 at Jugal Kishore Jewellers, 44/73, C.P. Ramaswamy Road, Alwarpet, and at Alsa Mall, Montieth Road, Egmore. INDIKA CREATIONS’ EXHIBITION OF ANTIQUE FURNITURE - THE DOOR Shanta and Suresh Narayan of Indika Creations have a collection of antique wood furniture, doors and collectibles from all over the country. They have converted their passion into a labour of love by ‘restoring, modifying, mixing and matching’ old wooden pieces to suit today’s lifestyle without destroying their essential character. So the rosewood door from Kerala with its dramatic knob becomes a dining table or a superbly carved Andhra door depicting birdlife, Krishna, Kamadhenu, and so on becomes the main door of a house or a decorative piece. Both Shanta and Suresh are involved in the process of ‘converting’ and restoring the old pieces, adding value to them with a touch of carving or a specially made tile. The duo team tries to preserve the past by giving every restored piece at least 100 more years of life.” The Indika Creations’ Antique Wood Exhibition also features joolas, rosewood cupboards from Goa, Indo-Portuguese pieces, magnificent, restored beds, planters’ chairs, French kompasses, a huge variety of chests and much more. The exhibition, which opens on November 8 at Indika Creations, 12 A, (29), 4th Main Road, Gandhi Nagar, Adyar, will be on till November 20.
